With football manager 2023 coming out shortly (8th November) and early access having been released already, its the perfect time to look at all the new features in Football Manager 2023.
But before we get into the new features, lets talk about which platforms are playable with fm23. Of course Football Manager 2023 will be available to play on Pc, Mac, Xbox devices and for the first time it'll be playable on PlayStation 5. FM Touch will be available on Android and Apple (through Apple Arcade) devices.
Enough of the teasing, lets get into all the new features.
Squad Planner:
The squad planner is a great feature that will help you "plan your squad" ( as the name suggests) The planner will help you with the recruitment for the near and foreseeable future ( 3 years of planning) of your team.

The squad planner will rank your players ability from best to worst based on the positions and tactics chosen, you can personally change the rank of any player by using the up/down arrow. The amazing part of this planner is the players wont know where they are ranked (so you wont have Pedri walking in and complaining that Gavi is higher ranked *whew*) but your staff will, which they'll use to help improve training and give you better advice.
You can add players from your shortlist into the planner and rank them accordingly. This helps you control your long term recruitment and hopefully reduce buying players that then become redundant after just 6 months.
Also in the planner there is an Experience Matrix tab, that will divide your players into 4 categories (Development, Emerging, Peak and Experienced) This is a great feature in determining where you squad is sitting for the future and if any immediate transfers need to be made.
Scouting & Recruitment:
Scouting supposedly has had major changes, one of those changes being assignments have been renamed to recruitment focus (which we hope the name isn't the only big change)
The idea of changing to a focus rather than assigning your scouts to certain areas or leagues, comes down to delegation. Your chief scout will now run your scouting around the world, based on your tactics and where he believes scouting is necessary. Then recruitment focus is used by us to find a specific player or the many wonderkids we want to find.
The recruitment focus tab will look pretty similar to what we used to with the original scouting, but the interface is definitely a lot cleaner and way more user friendly. If the new scouting method works, this could be game changing with reducing the amount of work needed to find players and proving delegation is a viable solution now in Fm.
My Favorite feature added to scouting is the Near Misses. We all hate when we miss a player because he was slightly to short or slightly to old, but thanks to near misses these players wont be ignored and forgotten. You can find any player who just missed the criteria you set in the near misses menu.
Champions League & Europa League:
European tournaments have always felt a bit lackluster and the games always felt the same as every other game. But finally the developers have agreed a deal to have European football tournaments in FM23. The addition include Champions league, Europa League and Europe Conference League.
The deal will include team sheets at the start of the game, the official trophy added, as well as the trophy ceremony will use the official stand.
One of the best features added is the "Draw". The draw of the team in each pool will be more official now with a whole screen showing the draw and having comments about each team draw. This adds so much more to European football in Football Manager and it doesn't just feel like another tournament or another game that needs to be played.
Tactics, Manager & Match Ai:

The only changes to tactics this year comes in the backline, with the addition of the pressing trap and changing the line of engagement to blocks. The developers have said the defensive tactics will be easier to understand and will explain what each change does.
Another change tactically comes less to the player controlled team but more to the AI controlled teams. The developers have announced massive changes to how the AI managers will manage their teams, with using "real" life tactics that the manager would use, as well as changing how their team will play according to the opposition they are up against. If this changes works, you could be needing to focus a lot more during the game and listening to your assistants advice with a few tactical changes to counter the AI opposition.
The developers have announced huge changes to how the game will play and feel. Having goalkeepers doing different types of saves and blocks, defenders will be prominent in the air, midfielders will be able to play more tiki taka type passes and many more. The balls movement has changed, and you can see the ball bobbling around, even getting visional air time when the players takes big touches.

The graphics still look like a 1980’s arcade game but you can finally add bling to your managers, such as watches and jewelry. Tracking your managerial achievements in Football Manager meant scrolling through text ,but now you will be able to access the Dynamic Manager Timeline. A tab that shows the highlights of your career in a visual way. As the name suggests, it’s a dynamic. As you progress through more and more seasons, the timeline will change to make sure only important milestones and achievements from your career are highlighted.
Agents:
Agents will be more interactive this year, with the ability to discuss lower wages before hand, this give you an understanding of whether you can afford to bring the player in or if you should look else where. Your own players agents have a big part in you figuring out if they want a new contract and if so, how much they would be looking at (which you can discuss and try get the expectations lowered)
This is a feature that’s still miles away from where it should be, but this is a huge step forward and will make interactions with agents less aggravating and more constructive.
Supporter Confidence:
Supporters are everything in football and are a huge part in football clubs; even having the ability to have managers fired or players sold. Football Manager has slowly been adding more supporter visions and support but its now a fully fledged part of the game; where you can even get fired for not pleasing them (just another way to get you sacked)
You now have a Supporters tab under Club Vision. This tab will discuss what the supporters expectations for the season, as well as the clubs culture. You can see the teams social media following; if you take small lower league team up to the highest level, it will be great to see how the club grows through loyal supporters and how the clubs followers increase.
This new features excite me a lot and add more depth to the game, but is it enough to warrant moving from FM22 to FM23; other than just getting the updated team sheets. Guess we'll have to find out with the beta whether its enough of an upgrade to warrant buying it.
